Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students LOVE to use their small white boards and markers to show and share their work in class. When I need to have the entire class engaged and completing quick problems, I have the children use their white boards. However, once the markers dry out, they do not get a replacement!
I am a writing teacher this year and have all 500 students in the school come to my classroom during the week.
The children I teach do not usually bring in pencils or erasers due to their families economic situations. I did not have one child able to bring in white board markers! We are an at-risk school where more than 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunches and breakfasts. They need financial support beyond our district's dwindling budget.
My Project
When I have used the individual white boards and markers with my students in the past, every student became engaged in the lesson because every child is expected to show me their work on the white board. They cheer when I tell them it is time to get out the white boards! However, when their markers dry out, they need to share with another student because we do not have money to purchase more. By the end of the year, I had on average four children sharing one marker! Instead of having all children able to show me their work and their answers, I had to just go on to the next problem due to lack of time for everyone to use the markers. After awhile, we were not able to use the white boards any more.
The white board activities allow me as a teacher to get an answer from the entire class at the same time.
In the past, I would ask the class a question and only one child could verbally respond while the other children sat in silence. The white boards and markers keep all students engaged and active participants in the lesson. It also allows me to quickly see which children need extra instruction and which are doing well with the skill. Please help me to provide markers for all students!
