Words are powerful and they are the key to success. I teach first grade ESL at a title 1 school. We are 80% minority, 100% free lunch, and are surrounded by a low-income area. Our students struggle to meet the grade level standards in reading and writing because of the language barriers. However, they are the most hard-working students I have ever known. Their words, no matter what language, are powerful. To get there we need a little help.
My first grade students have shown a high interest in writing through out the year. They have come a long way in the writing process, from simple letters and words, to beautifully written, grammatically correct sentences. Normally we do much of our writing on plain lined paper with pencils. Of course we add a colorful picture to enhance what they have written. I would like to give my students a variation away from the standard paper and pencil and let them write their thoughts creatively on marker boards using colorful markers. I have many students who are more engaged when they can use different types of art media. I feel that these products will enhance their writing experience.
Our class is in need of lined marker boards and markers. The students will benefit by being able to practice their hand writing, write for creative purposes, copy and correct, use in centers, and for simply expressing their ideas in written form. If we can get our students to take an active interest in writing by using a marker board because it is fun and they can cozy up in a corner with it, than this investment is well worth it.
By donating these items to my class, you will be helping my students enjoy and express themselves through writing even more. You will be the one giving them that extra push to achieve greatness within themselves and you will be the one who opened the eyes of an unmotivated writer to becoming a future author.
