Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember your high school biology class? Where there any animals, or other living things? I believe that a kinesthetic instruction that includes hands-on laboratory exposure is critical in assisting all students to include those with limited knowledge or are challenged due to language barriers.
My students are mainly composed of Hispanic and African American students, and although our school is designated as a Medical Magnet, most of our students face the realities of inner city life: single parents, below or at poverty income levels, gangs etc.
and still these students perform and meet the rigor that we the staff at âOrthoâ expect. The experience that these students will obtain with this technology will surely prepare them to post high school and the work force as this technology is already in use in most collegiate and professional settings.
My Project
I am requesting 3 Living Rock community sets for our marine (salt) water aquarium. The materials add to the teaching/learning experience because it will be directly coupled with lessons on ecosystems; we will be able to directly observe the influence that energy and nutrients cycle through biological systems. Specifically, we will create a ecosystem that would feed itself; we will have decomposers, producers and consumers living of each other, while using natural resources. The important factor for the students to learn is that ecosystems exist only when all of the agents are working together. Moreover, students will be able to appreciate how delicate life is and how it can be disrupted by outside forces (mainly human interaction as in the introduction of waste and other harmful material.)
As stated above, the materials add to the learning experience.
Students will be able to see life in action, take part and feel ownership of the process. The lesson can be used and studied over a period of weeks if not months. The lesson will inspire students to take action and become advocates for policy in regards to preserving our natural resources, to recycle, to promote healthy life styles and urge the community to follow suit. Thank you for your support.
