This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My wonderful school is an overpopulated urban high school in the Title I standings with about 90% free and reduced lunch. Almost the entire school is an at-risk population, so my students have bigger worries on their plate than simply making it through the school day.

I am determined to make a difference at my school and in my class by allowing students the opportunity that other schools and students get everyday.

It is time to make them more well-rounded and have more experiences with prepare them for post-high school careers and life in general.

My Project

Quite often, at the beginning of the year, my students tell me that they have yet to complete any elaborate labs, dissect anything of note, or truly respect and be responsible for the care for live animals. In a Title I, urban high school, there is little funding and our science equipment is older and definitely has seen its share of time. Dissections are extremely helpful in my classroom as students can see, firsthand, adaptations that organisms have that allow them to survive in different bodies of water. Also, I have yet to have a simple classroom pet. I wanted to have students create and care for biospheres, but a nice aquarium setup can be just as amazing. It is time to bring new things and fun back into the science classroom. After all, I am in this for the students and they deserve it.
