I teach classroom music for students in grades 1-6. It is my philosophy, as music teacher in the school, to provide an environment for students to learn music in which they take an active roll in music making through movement, playing, singing, and improvising, and as a result, develop great understanding, skill, and passion for music. As music teacher, I am given the awesome opportunity to nurture a love of music and the arts in my students. I see each student twice every six days for 30 minutes. It is my goal to teach children in a manner that actively involves them in the creation of music as part of the learning process.
A world famous drummer is coming to our school for a week this spring to do a week long residency. Providing my students with opportunities to interact with world class musicians is largely one of my biggest goals as I continue to seek opportunities for sparking an interest in music in my students. Through other grant funding, a world famous percussion expert will work with our students over a five day period this school year. Besides working with small groups, he will guide an evening community drumming session as well where more music can be shared with parents, friends, and community members. To prepare for this event, we will be drumming more and more in the next year. Although we have some drums at our school, we do not have nearly enough to have one per student or to host a community drum event. Thus, I am requesting drums and drumming equipment to increase the number of students who are able to drum at one time and to make an amazing experience as described above possible.
I am requesting a set of paddle drums and two more tubanos. These drums will be used by hundreds of students and will be able to be used for many, many years. Having these drums will allow more students to actively participate in drumming activities at the same time and will help make our world drumming residency a success.
You will make it possible for my students to drum along with one of the world's best drummers, expanding their musical knowledge and experiences, as well as possibly igniting a lifelong passion for music and the arts.
