Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Percussion students are not like normal band students--as if there were such a thing--because they must master many instruments, not just one.
My students are a dedicated group, especially when it comes to marching band.
Over the summer, students memorize their music for the upcoming year and attend a week-long band camp. When the school year begins, they give up two nights each week to rehearse and learn their spots on the field. Simply put, these students go all-in.
The challenge many of my students face is financial as their families have difficulty affording their marching band supplies. This past year the problem became especially evident when a marching bass drum mallet broke. Our student did not have a spare mallet, nor the money to order a new one, so he used electric tape to hold the mallet head onto the stick. The black tape on the while mallet was very noticeable, so he always held it in his left hand where the audience (and judges at competitions) couldn't see it. Unfortunately, the judges at competitions could hear the difference in sound quality, which hurt our percussion score.
My Project
The completion of this project will provide the most expensive of our marching band supplies (bass drum mallets) to the percussion section. In the past, families have been expected to purchase their student's mallets. At the same time, the percussion section is transitory. With increasing skill levels and graduating seniors ahead of them, students usually only play an instrument one year before playing something else in the percussion section. Because of these factors, it didn't make sense to purchase mallets, and the students passed down their old mallets to the next person. I'm seeking a long-term solution for our upcoming marching season, which begins with band camp in July.
With this donation, my students will be able to perform their best without worrying about their supplies.
No longer will they need to hide their mallets in embarrassment. Instead they will take the field with pride and confidence, ready to share an outstanding performance with their audience.
