On August 29, 2005, the lives of people living on the Gulf Coast were changed forever. Our school district was one of the hardest hit, completely losing two schools. Our district is diligently working to provide a quality musical experience for our students.
The students at our school come from a wide cultural and economic background.
We are a Title 1 school with a large number of students living in poverty. The school, despite our numerous challenges, has managed to be the top academically performing school in our state. There are approximately 500 high school and 350 middle school students. Our community is located on the Gulf of Mexico.
Our band program, in the last two years, has tripled in size. The 2009-2010 school year was the most successful year for our band program in decades. Both our middle and high school band programs scored superior ratings at our district marching and concert evaluations.
The students in band are hard working, dedicated young men and women. Our band students are also involved in many community and service projects. The high school band was invited to perform and volunteered last April for the Keep America Beautiful project in our area. Our band students perform annually at numerous community events
My Project
Most of our percussion students are currently playing on sub-standard equipment. New mallets will give our students a sense of pride and will enhance their musical experience in band. The new mallets will be use at both middle school and high school performances at athletic events, pep rallies, and various performances.
Adequate equipment will allow the students, as well as the entire percussion section, to reach their greatest potential.
Our current band students, as a recruitment effort, tour our elementary schools to perform twice a year.
The gift of new mallets will impact hundreds of students through uplifting and inspiring performances. In band we stress team work, creativity, goal setting, respect and dependability. All these characteristics equip the students with the necessary skills to be a positive, productive, empathetic citizen. This gift will further the cause of music education in our community.
