Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Here at the band program we offer free instrumental music lessons to an extremely diverse group of students. All of my band students are extremely hardworking young minds who are always striving to succeed. For the past four years we have been performing at concerts, competitions, and parades. I am very proud to say that my students are always looking for more challenging performance opportunities where they can showcase their talents, as well as expand their musical repertoire. I believe that my students' participation in the band plays an important role in the creation of well-rounded students and citizens.
My Project
Every year the band participates in two different Memorial Day parades. The Memorial Day parade and the Norwalk Memorial Day parades. Both events are very important for my band students because it an opportunity for all the 6th, 7th and 8th grade band students perform together as a group and showcase all the work that they have been doing in their classroom throughout the school year. In addition to being a learning activity for my students, both parades are also part of the Norwalk tradition.
However, this year I have a record amount of percussion students, and not enough marching drums mallets and heads for all the students to play.
The marching band percussion sections (or drum line) is a vital part of any marching band, because it sets the beat to which everyone else in the band will march. The purchase of these materials will allow all my percussion students to participate in the parade and have a chance to showcase all they have learned in their band lessons.
Our band is also in need of saxophone reeds. Our yearly supply is almost over, and I fear that we will run out of it before the Memorial Day parade.
