Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The sound of a marching band is one of the classic sounds of fall. Help provide our new marching band with basic equipment to march and perform more effectively.
The students that I teach come from poor to middle class families.
For many of these families, it is difficult enough just to pay the bills, much less to provide decent equipment for the high school band to use. My students are hard working, dedicated students who have a love of making music. This is a new idea for these students, as there has not been a band program at this school in several years. In our first year, the students have learned basic musical notation and how to manipulate their instruments to achieve sound. Currently in our second year, we started a marching band that performs frequently in the community and have been borrowing old equipment from other schools to get through this year.
My Project
Having yardline markers for our band will help students learn their drill faster. As of now, I have to constantly assist students with finding their spot on the field. With yardline markers, they will be able to think for themselves and find their spot without assistance. I place a strong emphasis on independent thinking in my band as our world needs citizens that can think for themselves. Also, our current flagpoles are only 5.5 feet long. To fit a standard size flag on a 5.5 foot pole makes flagwork unbalanced and awkward. A set of 6 foot poles will enable my colorguard to perform their routine with greater ease and precision. Lastly, our marching baritone does not have a mouthpiece with it and we are currently borrowing a mouthpiece to make ends meet. Having a quality mouthpiece, is key to achieving a good tone on a brass instrument. Having reeds available for reed players will keep them playing when they can't get to the nearest music store (an hour away) for reeds.
A marching band is one of the most exciting and visually appealing showpieces that a school has to offer.
With your help, we can show my students that music is important and help them to have a better place to belong.
