Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a physical education teacher at P.S. 112. The population consists of financially challenged minority students. The school is encompassed by the Eden Wall Projects. I am writing to you because the health of my children is being jeopardized by the lack of physical activity and poor eating habits. I have a great percentage that suffers from asthma and obesity. I would like to start a project is called March Madness". This project would give the children an opportunity to participate in a physical activity while reaping the health benefits.
A lot of my children have basketball stars as their idols. They have a tremendous interest in the pro teams with hopes to one day play professional themselves. I believe with "March Madness" I can incorporate a beneficial healthy environment while encouraging higher education.
Also teaching the younger children dribbling will help with their eye hand coordination that will have a spill over effect in their reading and writing.
I would like to start this project in March when the college teams begin their playoffs. This way the students can aim high, towards a higher education. I believe that through hands on activities I will get a chance to know my students on a more personal level while bringing a healthy environment to our school.
Thank You for your consideration.
