Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian in a suburban school in Texas. I am excited because this is my first year at a new school and my first year as a librarian! There are about six hundred students from Pre-K to fifth grade at this Title 1 school. 85% of the students are Hispanic and we have a 22% mobility rate.
We are proud of how hard the children work and want them to be successful!
Our school's mission is to provide the appropriate tools and strategies to ensure the success of every child.
My Project
Due to Hurricane Harvey, our students lost a couple of weeks of valuable instruction time. Our school is in desperate need of higher test scores and higher achievement. Therefore, students and teachers have been trying to play "catch up" due to the disaster that hit our great city and state. Reading is the key to success, so I am proposing a reading incentive that will appeal to our love of basketball and March Madness!
What does March Madness look like in a library?
We will have brackets, but instead of teams we will have favorite books. Students will vote for their favorite book and we will end up with one favorite book for our school!
During the month of March Madness, I will decorate our library with basketball decor and students will participate in reading contests in hopes of winning prizes. What book do you think will win? Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Wonder? Captain Underpants? The big winner will be the kids who will gain a love for reading!
