My students need to explore a deeper understanding of and connection to The Little Rock Nine.
They need the book, March Forward, Girl: From Young Warrior to Little Rock Nine.
Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student, academically, physically and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.
My Project
Our teaching team works hard to bring relevant learning to our students across disciplines. One area in which we have succeeded is in our study of the Civil Rights Movement, focusing on the experiences of The Little Rock Nine. We use Melba Patillo Beals' memoir, "Warriors Don't Cry", to examine the racism these students faced and the strength of character that helped them to overcome this persecution.
My goal is to show students that they have a voice, no matter their age or circumstance.
Melba Beals' "March Forward, Girl" examines how Beals became a Civil Rights figure even as a young girl. This book is a great partner piece to "Warriors Don't Cry" allowing me to expand my unit of study to develop background knowledge of the events leading up to the integration of Central High School. Beals' age in this book aligns with my 8th grade students, allowing them to make connections that the might not otherwise have considered.
