Students come into my high school English classes craving connection and compassion. Although their home situations and experiences vary greatly, what connects our community of readers is the desire to find themselves, to find their truth, on the pages of a good book. Books can be mirrors or windows to the stories of our world. My goal is to connect my readers to the books they need.
A love for reading is built one story at a time.
Our high school students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but what connects our community of nearly 1,800 students is a love of reading. Our district values reading choice and encourages independent reading at all levels, all grades. During the month of March, we want to celebrate our community of readers.
My Project
This will be my fourth year organizing a March Book Madness where students and staff vote throughout the month of March for their favorite stories. In a March Madness-style bracket, we invite our community of readers to share their favorite books and encourage reading in our community. But my favorite part of this monthly focus on reading is being able to give away signed copies of books! Each school day in March, we are hoping to give away signed books to those students and staff who participate in voting. I have been fortunate to connect with a number of authors using social media who have volunteered to sign copies of books or send signed bookplates. In past years, I've been able to give away signed books by Lois Lowry, S.E. Hinton, John Green, Rainbow Rowell, and so many more! However, many times I needed to cover the cost of shipping and/or the cost of the actual books. As you can imagine, this can get quite expensive.
This project will help cover the cost of the signed books to be given away to our community of readers during the month of March.
This project will help us share signed copies of John Green's most recent book, Turtles All the Way Down. Additionally, signed bookplates will be affixed to novels by Tiffany Schmidt, Jennifer Niven, and Rainbow Rowell.
