Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third grade students are an enthusiastic group of hard working movers and shakers! I am getting to know my new group of students, and they are impressing me with their eagerness to make mistakes, take feedback, and share their thinking. Teaching for many economically disadvantaged students poses some challenges, though, especially obtaining the materials they need to be their most successful self. These students are worth all the efforts; they are our changers and leaders for a positive future.
My Project
Every year, I participate in March Book Madness, an online bracket-style book tournament that exposes students to new books, raises enthusiasm, and allows students to see how their votes count. This year will be the first year I do the picture books, and I am so excited to get my hands on the ones I do not have! Picture books are so important in my classroom: they are used as mentor texts for lessons, raise empathy, and are discussion pieces.
My third graders are learning the value of reading, and how a rich reading life improves our overall lives; these books will make us even richer.
