My students need the Mega Marble Run 100 piece sets so each table of young scholars can have the opportunity to learn artistic design while they build a marble run and explore force and motion!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are 67% African American, 22% Hispanic, 5% Asian and 3% Caucasian. Eighty-eight per cent are low income, 23% receive special education services and for 35% English is a second language. My students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and speak a variety of mother tongues in their homes.
We are an arts magnet neighborhood school in a densely populated urban neighborhood.
We provide a safe haven for our children that is both academically and culturally rich. My students' parents and guardians choose us because we offer a high quality education and a variety of extracurricular activities to meet their child's educational needs.
In my kindergarten art class students spend a great deal of time working on two-dimensional design projects like painting and drawing. We need resources for building and learn three-dimensional design, as well as introducing connections between visual art and science. My having a Mega Marble Run set for each table of young scholars in the classroom will allow them to engage in this discovery learning, as well as build their vocabulary skills in the areas of art and science.
The building of marble runs will not only teach sculptural design, it will allow my students to investigate the science concepts of force and motion through their designs.
Additionally, working in teams will support the students language skills as they learn to engage in academic conversations about building a great design and hearing other students ideas about the topic.
The project will stimulate growth and development of my new learners' artistic, scientific, and literacy skills, as well as encourage their social emotional growth by working in small groups. I think this is a very exciting way to encourage a love for learning in these young minds and foster an appreciation of school in their hearts!
