My Students
The students I serve live in a rural setting. Many of my students come from situations of limited finances. In the past, our school provided occasions to explore our varied state of Maine, but unfortunately those circumstances are gone. There are so many kind and caring young people with limited opportunity to travel outside of their locale let alone outside of the state. Therefore, many do not have connections to learning about the world outside of their town's setting.
Every teacher considers his/her students to have much potential; I am no different and believe with more opportunity to explore the world, they will be better prepared to acknowledge and appreciate their own surroundings.
My Project
The maps I currently have in my classroom are VERY old, one is torn and the world map could certainly be updated. I use maps as a reminder/reference to classroom discussions on current events and history lessons as well as pointing out locations that need a visual. It is important for students to have a large visual, not just a handout in front of them.
I wish to have a new US and world map added to the classroom.
The world is getting smaller every day; my students are quite interested in learning about other cultures and it is critical to regularly point out the actual locations of events to better understand their place in our world!
