This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am seeking funding for classroom maps to be used during Social Studies. I am a Special Education teacher for 7/8 grade in East Harlem. We have one small globe for the entire room and many of my student\'s learning disabilities affect their ability to read (especially fine print). Overhead projections (an extremely valuable aide when trying to emphasize a particular point or highlight a section of text) are impossible without a screen to show them on. All of my own childhood memories of classrooms include a chalkboard, clock and the pull down maps. My attention was always heightened with visuals and I remember the games and competitions that we had when identifying states, capitals and countries. Current events are an integral part of Social Studies and with our country at war and disasters occurring in foreign lands, it is important for students to have a sense of where these events are taking place. I remember at the beginning of the year when discussing students\' summer vacations that one of my current students said that they traveled to another country. It turned out he went to a neighboring state. Maps are not a luxury. They are a necessity for my students to understand their own country and the world at large. Some of my students have a state wide Social Studies exam this year and I fear without the proper resources they will be at a great disadvantage to students in other more equipped districts. Thank you for helping to create a comprehensive Social Studies program for my students.
