Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year Social Studies teacher at MS 301 in the South Bronx. I like to describe our school's location as a valley surrounded by several different housing projects that fill the sky above our school. Almost all of the children live within the government housing and receive government financial support. During the past year our school's finances have been severely cut, which has left our staff, and more importantly, our students at a great disadvantage. On almost a daily basis I am in desperate need of a world map and globes for my students who are studying American History. The goal for my upcoming project is to show the students how the United States declared their freedom from England (the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War). While we are planning on writing a 2 page paper, the kids are in great need of a visual understanding of the separation between the U.S. and England. Many of my students cannot grasp the difference between England and New England because they cannot visualize it. I believe it is crucial to their learning experience to have a visual aid in learning to understanding the complexity of the situation, and the world as a whole. I would be more than grateful if someone could support giving my students this experience.
