My Students

As a teacher in an urban school in Washington D.C., I teach students from all walks of life. Serving a diverse population of students with representatives from each ward of the city, the students have a wealth of varying experiences and challenges that they face on a daily basis. There is no "typical" student at our school. Instead, we strive to foster an environment of distinct individuals with different backgrounds who come together to foster a cooperative community.

Our students are budding classicists, entrepreneurs, humanitarians, and scientists.

They vary greatly in their experiences outside of school, which shapes their individuality, but within our walls, they come together through shared experiences to learn from each other and grow together. They are inspired, critical thinkers who thrive when given new opportunities to grow.

My Project

This year we are adding a new unit to our curriculum about the brain in hopes of educating our students about how they can use their minds, how their minds work to process their experiences, and how mindfulness can be a powerful tool. Since our brains are not something we can directly observe, the physical models and maps can help us visualize the structures and connections between those structures. Additionally, there is a lot of curiosity about how what we eat impacts our brains so I would like to use the text Brain Food: The Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power to teach students about the impacts of food.
