Collaboration is a big part of our teaching strategies for our students. As a STEAM school, we collaborate to make the learning experience for our students authentic and prepare them for the "real" world beyond the classroom. As educators, all have the same goal in mind: we don't want to prepare students who memorize and repeat back what they learn. Instead, we want to help creative, problem-solving, passionate learners to soar in everything they do. Several of our students come from technology deprived environment without access to the latest tech.
Technology is our present and our future and the use of technology can bridge the gap between the lag in the latest technology gap for our students.
Our school is medium sized in population, but filled with students who have a love for innovation and learning!
Our school is a Title I, with students who come from a variety of different economic backgrounds. Over 73% of our students receive free lunch. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics with 14% of our students with disabilities and 7% in the gifted and talented program.
As an educator, I want to incorporate technology tools and resources in academic standards. Instead of just researching and labeling a map, we are using Ozobots and Augmented Reality to extend the learning for our students. This method of teaching will allow students to apply skills and concepts in a manner that is authentic learning.
With the diverse population we serve, we want students to also have opportunities beyond the four walls of the classroom and empower them with high tech skills to compete in a global society.
Our instructional strategy would be for the students to program the Ozobots to map out a route based on what they learned about maps (i.e., map key, compass rose, etc.). Students would also use their research to create a song or dance from the countries on the map. Our lessons would incorporate collaborative teaching between the classroom instruction and research, coding and videography with augmented reality with the STEAM teacher and song creating and/or dance performance with the music teacher.
