So much about this upcoming year is unknown. No one is entirely sure how many students will be in each classroom and how many will be learning from home. Adding even more to this puzzle, we aren't even sure what supplies or spaces can be shared or how students will be able to interact.
In such uncertain times, these students need the stability and the shared experience that literature brings.
Whether learning from home or at school, my students need to find comfort in our classroom family.
My Project
There are many things about distance learning that make us feel, well... distant! Literature is one of those things that brings us closer together. We find common ground and absorb life lessons and we can do that from any location.
Current events have prompted many of us to ensure that many different cultures and skin colors are represented in our library.
I look forward to adding these types of literature to our room along with books about famous women, different interpretations of gender, strong activists in history, and other underrepresented stories in literature. Whether students experience these stories through Zoom, Google Classroom, or in person complete with a masked teacher, the focus of the literature will serve to bring us all together and make our classroom a safe and inclusive place.
