I work in a rural area on the border between California and Oregon. Many of the families in this community work in the agricultural field. The main farming industries are strawberries, alfalfa, and cattle. In grades kindergarten through eighth, there are approximately 203 students. The percentage of free or reduced-price lunch is approximately 77 percent and 24 percent of the students are ELL.
My students struggle with meeting the common core state standards in math.
One of the best ways to get my students to connect to math curriculum is through using hands-on math materials.
My math curriculum expects students to be at grade level when entering the fourth grade. Sadly, this is not the case for most of my students. Two of the core fourth-grade concepts my students struggle with are place value and fractions. My students are not making progress with these two concepts using just the worksheets found in their math books.
Hands-on materials like fraction strips, place value disks, and math games would help to make learning more concrete and fun for my students.
Students would be able to build and show exactly how many tens are in a thousand or how many twelfths it would take to make a fourth. In order to provide these experiences, I need hands-on supplies so my students can build their number sense. Your support would help me to develop a stronger foundation for my students. This foundation would help students to be more successful, which in turn would create a greater self-efficacy towards math in the future.
