Manufacturing and Design with a CNC Machine - Career Pathways
We need the XCarve 1000mm CNC Machine from Inventables so that our students can continue to explore career pathways and develop manufacturing and design skills to help them be prepared for future jobs.
The five students that are heading up this project are Aidan, Ryan C, Olivia, Ryan N, and Chase. Aidan, Chase, and Ryan C have experience in 3D printing and like to operate machines that can revolutionize classroom technology. Olivia and Ryan N are experienced in making 3D models that can then later be manufactured using this technology. These students, and the other students in the classes, are working on Career Pathways with the goal of being prepared for the 21st Century workforce.
In our classroom, the students are exposed to bio tech, computer programming, digital production, robotics and are learning to operate different types of manufacturing tools. The goal of our class is to expose the students to as much technology as we can so that they can find out what sort of classes they want to take in the future that will prepare them for their careers.
My students have been working on devloping skills for 21st century jobs. The X-Carve CNC machine will allow the students to learn to use computer and processing skills necessary in today's manufacturing process. They will be ale to design projects and carve images from materials such as wood and plastic. They will also learn the basics of CNC milling and G-Code. In addition, the students will work as a team to build the machine. The CNC machine comes disassembled and the assembly process will allow them to work as a team and follow directions that are laid out in a manual, both essential skills for future careers.
In Their Own Words
The goals that we are trying to acomplish with this project are to expand our "toolbox" of knowledge about these newer technologies, as well as to explore various ways that we can use our knowledge to assist in career choice. In addition, being able to put together the machine will help us understand the parts that work "behind the scenes", allowing us to think about other possible uses for the technology that we currently have.
With the skills and knowledge that we acquire from this project we can help explain to our peers how this newer technology works, so that they can also pursue projects similar to this and expand their knowledge as well. We can also create projects to inform people in the school about the technology that we have.
Because jobs are becoming more and more based around technologies, this project will help prepare us for the new rapid prototyping available because of these types of machines. These new tools are aiding in careers such as engineering, architecture, art, manufacturing, and robotics. Doing this project will also help the new generation of innovators be able to possibly redesign the technology we use today.
