I am fortunate to teach a diverse multilingual group of bright eyed 22 second graders in an urban school. They are an active and curious group of children who come from various cultural and social economic backgrounds with varying learning needs. They come to school ready to learn and to become independent learners.
I feel blessed and honored to be able to work with this wonderful, caring and eager group of learners.
Everyday they come to school with a positive attitude to learn.
My Project
I am so fortunate to really introduce fractions and place value for this grade, but it requires a lot of "hands on" activities to help them make connections to what is being taught. Having enough manipulatives for students to use is key in helping students learn and understand the concepts of fractions and place value. It is very confusing, and often students have memorized numbers when doing math, but they are often challenged by the "why" in math. Students are expected to share their thinking, and in order to share their thinking, they need to have manipulatives to use to help illustrate.
We struggle in the classroom with not having enough of the pieces for students to use, so we would like to add to our already small collection of manipulatives so that all students will be able to practice playing with numbers and fractions.
