My 2nd grade students are creative, full of energy and so excited to learn. They each have so much potential for growth. However, they all come from different backgrounds and have different experiences. Each student is unique and needs individualized instruction.
Regardless of their current level, all my students have the ability to learn and feel the joy that comes from making progress.
Given the right tools, I am certain that each student can feel successful. When they feel successful in their learning they become empowered.
My Project
My students are full of energy and are excited to learn. Math is such a great way for students to increase their capacity to think and reason! I love to see the light go on in my students' eyes when they make a connection or a discovery and are able to explain it to the class.
I want to give my students more opportunities to work with hands-on learning using math manipulatives in small groups.
As with all learning, the first step is concrete, tangible learning.
I am so excited to be able to use math manipulatives in my classroom! This year I have started implementing daily math centers. The students love playing games and doing specific tasks without realizing they are learning and doing math. With the additional manipulatives, the rekenreks, the dominoes, the timers, and ten frames I will be able to provide specific and leveled activities for my students to do. I absolutely love seeing my students discover mathematical patterns and new ways of thinking on their own. The math centers also allow me to work with small differentiated groups so that I can reteach students who are struggling or push the students who have already mastered the concepts. This past year I have discovered a love for math and teaching it and I am excited to be able to pass that love of learning on to my students!
