This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"We are Mathematicians!" my bright-eyes 19 students chant daily before math time. My students love MATH! It is their favorite part of the day, but they get tired of just doing math in the math workbook. As a teacher I am trying to make math not only fun, but meaningful as a subject.
I teach at a low-income school in Alphabet City, New York. Many of my students are immigrants (from Bengali, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, China, Poland) and English Language Learners. My students come from families that receive federal funding. By the time my students reach 2nd grade, many are behind grade-level. My job as their teacher is to catch them up so that they are ready for 3rd grade and the real world, as well as help them become confident in their skills.
Our school uses the Everyday Math Curriculum, which consists of many math workbooks that the children complete to show their understanding. I am trying to make math more realistic and meaningful than simply answering questions on a page.
This grant would allow my students to be able to "live math." This grant would include math games that allow students to practice math in real world situations. For example, to practice money students buy and make change for things in a store. To practice adding, students would use manipulatives to solve word problems, such as "Your class is throwing a party. There are 8 girls and 10 boys and 2 teachers. How many goodie bags do you need?" As students solve problems in real world situations, they are able to overcome the language and past experience barrier and use their actions to solve and later talk about math.
Help bring math to life in my classroom, so that my students truly feel confident in chanting,"We ARE Mathematicians!"
