Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Pre-K teacher, who teaches four-year-olds at a low-income/high poverty urban school district. I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. They struggle daily in writing, reading, and math. They come to school hungry, unclean, tired, and desperate for attention. They just want to be loved. My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous. They like to move, and they love to read. They want love and lots of positive attention. They are always smiling and full of spirit at school.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and all receive free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
Our school provides a backpack program to feed many of these students over the weekend. I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. It is my goal to provide them with the best education possible.
My Project
My students are in need of new manipulatives. I just transferred to a new school, and these are things my classroom would benefit from having. The tweezers and tongs will be used to help develop better fine motor skills. The alphabet monkeys will help my students learn to recognize and put letters in the correct order. Sorting by color, shape, and size is one of our Pre-K standards, and we will use the counting bears to work on this skill. The write the letter activity center will allow each of my students in the learning center to have their own writing board and set of letters to use as they practice writing and forming each letter correctly. My students love free play, and the waffle builders are something they would enjoy playing with during this time. My students are low academically, and these manipulatives will be used to help them improve their reading, writing, and math skills.
