The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple. ~S. Gudder
My students need concrete, hands-on manipulatives and activities to develop a solid math foundation to build on.
My classroom is full of 24 first grade students who love to learn.
They are eager to do hands-on activities and make connections that take them to a higher level of learning. There is a variety of levels and needs within my classroom. Our school is located in Western Pennsylvania.
My Project
Imagine walking into a classroom of 24 students learning how to build and join numbers to 20. Counters would not be falling on the floor or getting lost. Instead, students can hold up their boards to show their work. The ten frame boards would provide the students with ease in solving problems that make 10 or 20. They also assist in creating a number sense. The addition and subtraction sentences can be written directly on the board and held up easily to share. What happens when a child finishes work early? Or needs additional practice on addition and subtraction facts for fluency? He/she can develop those skills by solving facts and getting instant feedback. The fact cards with pens will assure a child is learning the facts correctly. The learning centers will allow hands-on learning in small groups for topics being taught all throughout the year.
These ten-frame whiteboards, fact cards, and centers will save instructional time, create concrete learning, and allow for skill reinforcement.
Engaging these young minds will develop a strong math foundation for them to build on.
