I teach an eager group of third graders who are always asking questions and are excited to learn. They come from a variety of backgrounds, and most of them are kids living in rural Montana. They are curious and not afraid to take risks and try new things, but some come from homes where the school is a safe place to feel loved.
Some are high achievers who are determined to do well in all academic areas, while others have difficulty simply sitting at a desk and focusing.
They all want to do well and are extremely proud when they master a new skill or make a new friend. They are at an age where they still love to learn and have a million stories to tell you about all of their experiences.
My Project
Challenging concepts such as multi-digit multiplication, long division, and place value are difficult and stressful for kids. Students get easily frustrated and are unable to attack problems without support. These kits will allow me multiple modes of teaching these tricky concepts.
Increasing the amount of different methods and manipulatives I have to teach difficult mathematical concepts increases the chances that students will find one strategy that they understand and feel confident using.
Color coding simplifies the process and allows students to easily line up their numbers. In addition, having a dry-erase format allows me to use and reuse these boards often and in many different settings.
