This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the Early Childhood Special Education teacher in our district servicing our youngest students with special needs. Split into two 3-hour sessions, we service students with various strengths and needs from the ages 2.5 to 6 years of age.
We work hard to try to give students experiences that will provide them with emotional, social, academic, motor and language skills to help them succeed in Kindergarten.
Each year our classroom has a budget of approximately $200 in which paper, glue, paint and play-dough are purchased from. Each year, we are left with very little to purchase manipulatives for the students to use. Our students are at the concrete level for learning and learn best through manipulating, and experiences.
Our students are eager to learn and are engaged when we are able to provide hands-on materials. They grow so much in the time they are with us, and with the right interventions, many of them continue on to general education or only need minimal supports.
My Project
I have been sending home task boxes for the kids during this school closure. These are materials I can send home to help them strengthen their fine motor skills, but also help them explore safe sensory materials. I also included a couple of items to address the fact that many of my students this year do not know their body parts yet. The magnetic people not only help me to include diversity in my classroom, but also help to teach head, body, feet/legs. Once they know those then we can work on the smaller body parts!
