My students need counters, sorting bears, clocks, and play money in order to learn the advanced math skills that my school asks them to achieve. We recently increased class sizes and are needing supplies to accommodate each student.
I teach at a school that serves a low-income area of Arizona. Usually, about a 1/4 of my students start their school year knowing very little English and about the same amount of parents as well. This makes things a bit challenging but we all know the sooner they start learning the better.
My school levels our students into high, medium, and low classes.
This is difficult in kindergarten because students grow so fast and some learn faster than others so you end with a class that is all over the map. Each year, I receive the class labeled as low and each year I do my best to find ways to enrich not only my students who are struggling but also my students who are excelling.
My Project
My school recently increased our class sizes by 10 each and when doing so they only ordered one class set of manipulatives to be split among the three classes. Some of our classes were already short on supplies, so this left us without enough for each student to use.
Hands-on learning is so important at this young age.
They enjoy lessons more when they have a manipulative to use and thus tend to learn more as well. With these supplies, I will be able to teach lessons in a way that reaches every learner. For example, a student that learns better hands-on will be able to use the bears to get the concept of counting or adding and subtracting. The clocks could help a visual learner by having the example right in front of them instead of in front of the class. Funding this project would ensure that each of my students would have the manipulatives they need to enrich their learning.
