Manipulatives and Hands-on Materials for Making Sense of Mathematics
My students need math manipulatives and hands-on materials like fraction circles, counting chips, and a Whiteboard Drawing Instrument Set to supplement print curriculum.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are disadvantaged urban residents of a metropolitan area. About 80% of my students are from low-income families. My students are on the unfavorable side of the ever widening achievement gap. As a group, their test scores indicate that they are performing far below average within the state. They struggle with literacy as well as fluency in mathematical and scientific concepts.
My students are fabulous, witty, inquisitive, and street smart kids who can build confidence in their mathematical skills with the proper supports.
However, they lack the resources for incorporating hands-on learning into regular classroom mathematics instruction.
My Project
Manipulatives like counters and number dice help students to reason and make sense of abstract mathematical concepts.
A Whiteboard Drawing Instrument Set will facilitate student modeling in the classroom, a proven method for increasing engagement and cooperative learning.
A coordinate grid dry-erase classroom kit will help students establish a firm understanding of the coordinate plane, which is an essential prerequisite to success in the future study of algebraic functions. My experience with older students has indicated to me that middle school students in my district do not master basic concepts of correspondence and equivalence in the context of the coordinate plane. By increasing their engagement with learning objectives through the use of these materials, I believe, I can affect their mathematical achievement far beyond my classroom.
