This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Children need to be able to manipulate concrete materials before they can get an abstract understanding.
My second grade students are from a school in Illinois.
98 percent of our school is free or reduced lunch. Despite the low funds coming in to our school, my students are eager to learn! They work hard and really push themselves to understand what we are doing in class. Unfortunately, we as a class are still struggling to master number sense.
My Project
In order to help us conquer number sense we need manipulatives that the students can interact with to move them from a concrete understanding of mathematics to an abstract and logical understanding. A set of base ten blocks for each child would allow children to work at their own pace and not rely on their neighbor's pace. The base ten blocks come in increments of ones, tens and hundreds. These tools will help students to get a visual of a number's worth so they can apply this understanding to more complex mathematical learning.
These supplies will give my students the tools they need to be great mathematical thinkers.
Until they understand math concretely, with the help of these manipulatives, they cannot fully understand mathematics. I want for my students to truly internalize mathematical concepts so they can apply it in their everyday lives and be competitive for college.
