Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are high school Autistic multicultural inner city students who learn best with hands on activities.
Working with manipulative toys and activities benefits my students tremendously in numerous ways. They help to teach and practice their interactive and sensory skills.
All of my students come from the inner city, specifically the South Bronx. About 50% qualify for English Language Learner Services and all of them are highly autistic. Our different cultures and social backgrounds provide diversity in the classroom but it isn't without challenges. Our school, like many others in the South Bronx, have a lack of resources. Especially resources that are tailored to the needs of our students. That's where you come in!
My Project
My students are in need of toys and activities that focus on visual and manipulative stimulation in order to learn. Some ways that manipulatives help are in understanding numbers, addition, prepositions, extending and imitating patterns. For example, the Lakeshore Community Garages - Set of 8 set will allow me to physically and visually teach my students about safety and community rules. This would be especially beneficial when we are out in the community on walks and school trips. The Lakeshore Shape Discovery Boxes will allow my students to have visual and physical representation of the shapes that we are learning in class. Students with sever autism need different tailored lesson plans for effective learning. Manuipulative materials are the best option for my students
Manipulative materials allow my students to grasp concepts and ideas that would otherwise be much more difficult.
With the materials listed below I will be able to create lessons plans that focus on mathematical skills, specifically geometry, addition, subtraction, basic algebra, etc. These materials would benefit my current and future students as well.
