Manipulating Our Way Through Math

My Students

I am a first grade teacher. I am dual certified in both elementary and special education. I have taught for a total of 14 years in Florida and 4 years in the state of New York.

A lot of my students have undiagnosed learning disabilities which include severely learning disabled as well as those students with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

My students are very eager to learn and have the ability to learn as well. They just need a little more tender loving care.

My Project

The way that we are teaching our children math is changing. Gone is the time where the teacher stands in front of their students, giving them worksheets or preaching a concept that their students work with until mastery. We now teach our students through accountable talk. They talk with their partners about a variety of math problems and figure out ways in which to solve these problems. They also work together in centers on a variety of concepts. With the help of these manipulaties, the students will gain the confidence they need to be successful in math.
