Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Different, not less." That is a quote from Temple Grandin referring to herself and every other individual with autism in our world.
My classroom is filled with 13 amazing, energetic students, all of whom have a diagnosis of autism and intellectual disabilities.
My students have an enormous amount of potential, but being in a school with 100% low-income on top of their varying disabilities, makes it extremely difficult to provide them with all of the engaging materials that they need to learn. I teach all subjects in my classroom, but in a much more modified and individualized manner than in typical classrooms. These students come to school every day, excited and ready to learn and explore. They all have their own unique personalities and learning styles, along with their own challenges that come with autism and developmental delays.
My Project
Teaching a low incidence program requires me to create all of the lessons and materials for math on my own. It would be amazing if the students could have some nice, store bought learning activities that are already aligned to the Common Core. These activities will help my students learn to count, add, and subtract, which is going to be our first unit of the school year. Some of the students will be using the Find the Number Counting Kit to practice number identification, while others will be using the Pop and Add games, and the Addition and Subtraction Discovery Cans, to practice adding and subtracting numbers under 20. By the end of this unit, I want to show that each student has mastered their math IEP goal by using these fabulous STEM resources from Lakeshore Learning!
Can you imagine going to the store to buy something...but not knowing how to count, add, or subtract?
Teaching these foundational skills is so important to my students, so that they can have the basic life skills to function in the world around them.
