My students need manipulatives in order to learn various math concepts through a hands-on approach.

"There should be no such thing as boring mathematics." --Edsger Dijkstra Have you ever looked at a page of numbers and felt like your head was going to explode? My students feel the same way on a regular basis. I want to make math more interesting and fun for them!
My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with exceptional learning needs.
They attend school in a high-need area in Chicago, IL. Most are currently achieving below grade level. They need multiple means of expression in order to understand various math concepts. For most of my students, math is like a foreign language. They do not understand it, and they have no idea how it relates to their lives, or how to use it outside of the classroom. I want to make sure that they have an adequate understanding of math in order to prepare them for high school and college and careers to come.
Because of the varied nature of this manipulative set, my students will be able to use it for multiple math concepts. They will be able to not only see the relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages on a piece of paper, but they will actually be able to touch and feel examples. They will not just plug numbers into a formula to find the area of figure, but they will be able to build the area themselves. All students learn differently. Traditionally, classrooms facilitate learning for only a handful of learners. This set of manipulatives would allow me to reach all of my students, rather than just a few.
My students will soon be entering high school.
For them, it will be a very different and challenging environment. Using manipulatives to learn math will help them to truly understand math concepts, rather than just recording figures on paper. They need to build this solid understanding in order to be successful in high school, and later in college and careers.
