The students in my middle school math classroom are capable and full of energy. The key to their success is getting them to focus that energy into the math work they are doing each day, and giving them the opportunity to believe in the strengths each of them possess. They get excited about online practice games and activities in class where they are challenged. Combining paper and pencil practice with activities and games has proven successful at guiding that energy and developing independent learners.
No matter what ability a student has in my middle school math class, the one constant that has continued for 30 years is that every child deep down wants to be successful.
For my students, getting them to realize their potential and providing opportunity to practice and persevere are crucial to this success. My students have a variety of ability levels in one classroom. From students with identified math disabilities, reading disabilities, and some with math skill deficiencies to those that excel in math, all want to do well and deserve the chance to do so.
My Project
Manipulatives can make a student's uncertain abstract mathematical world piece together and form into new skills and knowledge. Students are more engaged and focused with the math at hand. When they have the opportunity to begin learning an abstract mathematical concept as a tangible hands-on activity, math seems less out of reach. Having integer chips will provide that connection with integer computation. Cubes will be used to understand the relationship between length, area, and volume. The many dice will be used to connect theoretical and experimental probability. Students will benefit incredibly from the experiences they will have in my classroom with these manipulatives.
Online math games and activities as well as math board games, enhance and enrich the learning experience for students.
Most online games have sound that add to the experience. Having a classroom set of headphones will allow students to get all that they can from online learning sites. My students were excited about learning with the few board games we have used in math class this year. Math games provide the opportunity to apply math concepts and skills. Whether students are working cooperatively to solve a problem or competing to win the game through applying prior math knowledge and skills, one thing is certain, their focus and attention is evident as is their enjoyment.
Fidget bands are an additional supply I am asking for to aid some of my middle school students with their need to move as they work independently in class. Fellow colleagues have found these very successful with helping students to focus and stay seated in class. I want to give kids the same opportunity in math class.
