Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My seventh and eighth grade students come to school carrying piles of stress and the impact of tragedies on their shoulders. They face more troubles in their short lives than I would hope to face in a lifetime. Yet, despite their hardships, they continue to amaze me.

My students attend school in a building that is over 100 years old with a lack of resources; yet, they harness the potential to change the world.

They just need access to resources to reach and realize their full potential. Now, that is where amazing people like you come in.

My Project

In primary math classrooms, you will oftentimes see students working with hands-on items to practice the math skill and learn about a variety of math concepts. However, as a student moves from one grade to the next, the use of math manipulatives lessens. This should not be the reality. Math manipulatives should be a staple in all math classrooms.

Visual representations represent a major stage in the journey from concrete to abstract understanding in mathematics!

Not all students learn by just seeing or hearing how to complete a problem; instead, they need to practice the skill hands-on. Kinesthetic learners need to visualize the concept in order to internalize it.

The algebra tiles will allow my students in both 7th and 8th grade to better understand expressions and equations; a concept that confuses many middle school math students. The dry erase pockets will house reference sheets with formulas, rules, and strategies they can refer to throughout the year.
