Manipulating Math, Breaking Down Math, Physical Math! HA!
Help me give my students math resources that support their learning of number sense, number recognition, number fluency and composing and decomposing skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our Elementary school believes in fostering quality learning for all our students to ensure that at the end of elementary they are global citizens that are middle-high-school-college and work ready!
This year I will teach 22, six and seven year old students considered as English Language Learners.
All of my students come from households within a low-income community. They have different challenges - economically, socially, physically, mentally and even language barriers. Despite the obvious challenges associated with low-income households, my students prefer to be present in our classroom everyday and actively engage and participate in our learning community.
These 22 students have unique learning styles but are most challenged by the low levels of communication they command in the English language. This year we are looking forward to create our learning environment to the most conducive safe learning space that encourages our class to actively engage in conversations, writing and listening to discourse in students first language and the English language.
My Project
My ESL students rely predominantly on visual aids and tactile resources to aid their learning. With our request for math materials in the form of games, my students will be able to see a demonstration of our mental math problems before their independent practice.
All the materials requested in this project will greatly support my ESL students' learning of early numeracy.
The resources give them objects to feel and manipulate in many ways before we stretch our learning to abstract thinking.
As a school, we strive to produce well rounded scholars ready for upper grades and beyond. This project encourages and supports students' learning of key math concepts which are crucial in building students' motivation to advance their knowledge and skills of math concepts and hopefully science.
