Our school serves students in grade K-5. It is a Title I school, where all students are offered free breakfast, and approximately 95% of the students receive a free lunch. The parents are hard-working, but still, struggle to survive. Therefore, the students suffer when it comes to school supplies or helping out the classroom with supplies.
I teach fourth and fifth graders that are either gifted or high achieving students.
The students are given an intensive alternative curriculum, in order to push them even harder throughout the year. My classroom lacks many supplies for the students, in order to make it a conducive learning environment where they can shine.
My Project
My students need to use visual aids more when learning math skills. Education changes constantly, but being a visual learner is going to stick with a student their entire life. Clocks, base ten blocks, versatiles, and other manipulatives will allow the students to visually see the skill.
Students who struggle in math continuously fall behind as the years pass.
Manipulatives allow the students to see what they are learning rather than watching what needs to be learned. Students are able to enjoy learning when they are involved in it. The hands on tools will allow the students to be part of the learning physically by using their hands. Students will no longer be a warm body in the classroom watching a math lesson.
