Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have been working hard to expand their love of reading. We love traveling to new places through books and learning about this beautiful world on our journeys. Literature can act as a vehicle to help us engage with our common core curriculum, but also to help students work through life-lessons.
My students are happy, resilient children attending a high-poverty school in California.
They desire to achieve at the same level as students all over the country but at times lack the necessary resources. They come from a variety of different backgrounds. I have students who are second language learners, low socio-economic backgrounds, students who are receiving special services, and students who excel in most academic areas.
My Project
My students are captivated by high-interest chapter books with complex characters and Maniac Magee is just the book to fill that need!! To feed their interest in award-winning chapter books and ignite their love for reading, students need sets of interesting chapter books to read as a whole class.
Students will read these texts in class, driving their own comprehension as they engage in critical discussions about their reading with their peers.
The complex characters and plots of this novel will undoubtedly spark a long-term love for reading that will propel students into middle and high school.
Jerry Spinelli does a lovely job of bringing his characters to life and the life lessons that they can learn from getting the opportunity to study "Maniac Magee" will surely lead to rich discussions with the novel!
