Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects and activities that include history, science, literacy, and art!
My Project
The Manhood Project will give our young African American high school students many opportunities to learn about African and African American culture and history. They will work with school and community leaders and elders to learn healthy ways to communicate and contribute to their community.
During this program, these young men will develop awareness and skills for healthy relationships.
As they view and discuss films like Africa’s Great Civilizations series, students will learn more about the struggles and achievements of strong African and African Americans.
As they talk together about these films, students will begin to recognize their own strengths, skills and abilities. As part of this program, students will also plan and participate in community activism.
