About My Students

Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.

This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects & activities that include history, science, literacy and art! Grant writing helps students be clear in the descriptions of what they want, how they will be leaders & why they want more books about African American History and culture.

We have been developing a room that features African American art, posters, books and media. Several students are interested in reading and researching more about African Civilization as well as about early Africans in North and South America. These new books will provide a strong framework for discussions about the arc of history that still affects students today.

In Their Own Words

We need books about Africa and African American culture to read and to learn. We don't have many books now and these will help us and they are good resources for students to be more interested in other thing like history. These books are important to our learning about our culture. -Demere

I will be a leader by showing that reading gets your mind better and it shows our fellow youth how beneficial reading can be in the long run. Everyone needs to learn about Africa and African American history and culture and these books are for all students to read and learn. -Demere

When we get the books I will take advantage of all these books. I will take heed for my learning experiences. All the students need these books because it teaches us something different in history and expands our mind. I will make sure the books are kept in order & that the students know about these new books. Demere
