Our school serves students in grades seven through twelve and is located one block from city hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year, we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects and activities that include history, science, literacy and art!
My Project
Our students participate in Manhood Development Programs every week. They learn in many lessons and projects about African and African American history and culture, chess and hip hop programs.
Students are very interested in reading the new biography of Frederick Douglass by David Blight which has been called, "a stunning achievement...may not be the last Douglass biography, but it is one for the ages."
They are also eager to read other books about Frederick Douglass including his writings and quotes. Students also requested a hip hop book to add to their studies.
Students will learn about the life, achievements and writing of Frederick Douglass and they will gain insights into current U.S. issues, too.
