This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a bilingual special education teacher who serves an elementary school in the South Bronx. It is one of the poorest in the nation. Over fifty percent of our students live in shelters, ninety-nine percent receive free lunch and thirty percent receive special education services.

Our students are mostly immigrants from South and Central America, who are in need of more than a pencil and paper to understand the world around them.

They share the drive to learn about the world through videos, pictures, and even YouTube videos. The need for supplies is great since our resources are often very limited.

Education is often the only escape. It gives them the hope that one day they will be able to experience the world. Our students are in a self-contained cognitive impairment classroom.

My Project

My students love manga and graphic novel books! Manga is the perfect way for students to gain reading competence and confidence to build their skills. The layout of these books are great for sequencing and plot development.

Unfortunately, the manga section is very limited in the library.

Everyday a student will ask if a particular title has come in. As soon as one manga book gets checked in, someone checks it out. At times the students leave the library empty handed. This project will help me get more popular manga titles in the hands of my students.
