About 70% of our students come from low-income households and many are not able to bring the supplies they need.
The English Language Learners at our school are a very diverse group of students, who represent about 25% of our total population. Some of our students are recent immigrants and some grew up in the United States but speak another language at home. Our students speak Arabic, French, Hmong, Lao, Mandinka, Spanish, and other languages.
Our school is about 70% low income and we rely on donations for many classroom materials.
Through this collaborative project, students are working on real-life problem-solving to stay on budget. Groups had to decide their project idea together and they could not exceed $400 for the budget, which was a challenge for some groups to work together as a group. They also developed leadership skills by taking on different roles for the project and for deciding how to implement the project in class.
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to get snacks and manga. We are trying to make kids more energetic by giving them snacks and we are trying to get kids to read, so later on, they will actually read other books that they might not like. And with Manga it will be easier and more fun and it will give the kids a good impression of books.
We will ask for money donations on DonorsChoose.org then we will go to Amazon to order about like 50 mangas and then with the leftovers we will order a bunch of snacks on Amazon. We will take a leadership role so people will be able to read and be able to have a snack while they are reading.
This project is important for my school because some people need to start reading and what better way is there then Mangas. Snacks will make everyone more energetic so they can stay active the rest of the day. Mangas get the reader interested because they have pictures on every page so people will like to read it if they like pictures. This will also get kids to read outside of school.
