"All set?" "You bet!" the students would answer. But the truth is, their classroom isn't set for them. There is a record number of kids in this class, and materials are not organized so kids are motivated to be in school.
Our school district was once considered small.
In one study, our district is predicted to out grow all of its buildings in 5 years. The students in my class are outstanding and reach high expectations. Just last year, our building received news that we are no longer on the SINA list for math and reading. Students and teachers work very hard.
My Project
When my students come to school, I want them to feel like they are wanted, like they are at home - in a sense. They realize that they spend a lot of time at school, and that we are their "second family". I want them to feel like they belong. With the new mailboxes, each student will be able to have their own mailbox for papers. Students will have an easily accessible nonfiction book that will display the colorful covers that motivate students to pick them up. The lab coat and hand lenses will make science experiments more exciting and meaningful. The paper rolls will be used as a "graffiti" wall for kids to write math terms and vocabulary - another motivational activity that displays the kids' work and also helps them feel like they belong.
Kids need to feel safe and like they belong so learning can take place.
Having enough supplies and space for all kids provides this sense of belonging. With the new mailbox system, each student would have a mailbox. When I ask my kids, "All set?", I want them to be able to reply, "You bet!" and truly feel that they are set up for success!
