My inclusion kindergarten students are the best. I could not be more amazed by these 5- and 6-year-olds. They show up every day with smiles on their faces and an overwhelming amount of love in their hearts. Their desire to learn and excel impresses me daily.
I teach at one of the most diverse schools in Tennessee with over 30 countries being represented by our wonderful boys and girls.
My classroom is the most beautiful "melting pot" you can imagine.
Our school is a Title I school; therefore, assistance is provided to 100% of our students. We are also a Leader in Me school. The Leader in Me is based on Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People; this initiative focuses on empowering confidence and creating well-rounded learners and leaders.
My Project
My students have big emotions. They have big "fun" emotions like excitement or happiness; but they also can have big "unhappy" emotions like anger or sadness. These emotions can sometimes get out of their control and can cause them to be violent or unkind.
I like to teach my students that it is okay to feel unhappy emotions, but we need to manage them safely.
I am asking for some items to help students understand and manage these emotions. Weighted lap pads, magnet wands, a space ball, and chair bands will be used to help students get a calm mind when they are feeling overwhelming feelings. Emotions and understanding myself match ups and mirrors are hands on ways for students to understand more about their feelings. The happy/sad octopus is a way students can show my how they are feeling without acting out. The kids always love books that explain our big emotions in kid friendly ways; "My Body Sends a Signal" and "The Feelings Book" do just that. Thank you so much for caring about my students social emotional needs.
