Mammals 'R Us

My students need a set of animal x-rays, animal bites, and a track mold kit.

Hands-on materials to enhance the study of animals will bring science to life for my students. I teach fourth grade in a small rural school in Oregon. Approximately one third of the students in my class are English Language Learners and we have a high percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced price meals.

Students always enjoy the life science unit on mammals; however, our sole source of materials for the unit and related individual research papers is a curriculum outline and materials that I check out from the local library.

Research materials would be much more meaningful if they included hands-on activities. The supplies I requested would allow students to practice inquiry-based science so that they could actually construct their own theories and knowledge about various animals. The replicas of animal jaws/teeth will allow students to make predictions and comparisons about how animals' diets differ. The animal X-Rays will help students understand more clearly about anatomy and how animals' bodies differ according to function. The molds for animal footprints will help students visualize differences among foot structure. They can practice animal identification and have a tangible resource to support understanding.
